Autism is a life-long, complex developmental disability that usually appears during the first three years of life. Parents and expert clinicians can typically detect symptoms during infancy, although a diagnosis is not often confirmed until the child fails to develop functional language by age two.
Autism is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. This disorder affects the normal development of the brain, resulting in problems with social interaction and communication skills. The child also has restrictive or repetitive interests and behaviors.
The range of severity for autistic people varies greatly – there are those with little speech and poor living skills, to others who function well in most of everyday life activities. Approximately 70 to 75 percent of those with autism are also mentally retarded. Some adults with autism are able to live independently.
Boys are three-to-four times more likely to have autism than girls. Autism occurs in all racial, ethnic, or social groups. For more information see our resource links.
