What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a neurological condition that affects the nervous system and makes people prone to seizures. Seizures in epilepsy may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but most of the time the cause is unknown. Epilepsy is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system. According to the Epilepsy Foundation, a seizure is a change in sensation, awareness or behavior due to a brief electrical disturbance in the brain.

Seizures are epileptic events and having seizures is the defining characteristic of epilepsy. The types of seizures can vary -- from a momentary disruption of the senses, to short periods of unconsciousness, to convulsions. A person might have one type of seizure, or have more than one type.

Every year, 181,000 Americans will develop seizures and epilepsy for the first time. Currently more than 2.7 million Americans of all ages have epilepsy. Epilepsy can develop at any stage of life, especially in childhood and old age.
There are seizure-preventing medicines available, but since seizure medications are not a cure, they are used to help control seizures for a majority of the people with epilepsy.
